Rev. Nelson B. Rivers III, a baptist minister and Chief Operating Officer of the NAACP, is a strong proponent of equal LGBT rights, as well as an opponent of discrimination in general. In regards to South Carolina's proposed marriage amendment, the Reverand said, "This is not about sexual orientation or about a lifestyle, this is about fairness and equality."

Rivers' faith informs his critique on the shortcomings of American principles: "America has benefited from God's good graces, from a land rich in natural resources. But instead of showing God honor by honoring his land and his people, America is a greedy and selfish nation. But democracy is more than a slogan."
