Fred Phelps Sr. is best know for his hate speech. Among other things, he is responsible for vile demonstrations at the funerals of American soldiers, claiming that they died because the United States enables "fags". His group often carries signs such as "Thank GOD for IEDs" at the funerals. He is also notorious for the website http://www.godhatesfags.com, and for picketing the funerals of gay men with signs declaring that "GOD Hates Fags". He is the "minister" of Westboro Baptist Church. His followers are recognized as a hate group by both the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center.
