Michael Lord was talking to Sabrina Farber, co-owner of Garden Guy, on the phone on 18 October 2006 to set up an appointment. Accoring to Mr. Lord, during the call to set up the appointment, "Mrs. Farber kept referring to me and my wife. I told her it was actually my partner." The call ended normally, with the appointment set up. However, five minutes later Mr. Lord recieved this email from Mrs. Farber:
Dear Mr. Lord,
I am appreciative of your time on the phone today and glad you contacted us. I need to tell you that we cannot meet with you because we choose not to work for homosexuals.
Best of luck in finding someone else to fill your landscaping needs.

Mr. Lord's partner sent a copy of the message to friends, and shortly a fire-storm of comments on the Garden Guy forums ensued. Many indicated that they would boycott the company and encourage others to do so as well. Mr. Lord said that he did not notice the message on the website opposing marriage equality before contacting Garden Guy.
